A variety of different training programs are in existence for people hoping to get into the IT industry. To find one you’ll be happy with, look for a company with assistance to help you find which career will match your personality, and give you an understanding of the job responsibilities, to help you clearly understand whether it’s the right one for you.

There’s a big selection when it comes to such courses – from basic office skills up to training programs for programmers, networkers, web designers etc. Take advice before you take the plunge – talk to an advisor with knowledge of the market sector. Someone who can help you select the right career path for you – that’s both relevant to industry and will prepare you for a career you’ll enjoy.

The latest training methods at last give students the chance to be instructed on an innovative style of course, that is far less expensive than traditional courses. The low overhead structure of the new courses means anyone can afford them.

A subtle way that training companies make more money is by adding exam fees upfront to the cost of a course and presenting it as a guarantee for your exams. It looks like a good deal, but let’s just examine it more closely:

Everyone knows they’re still footing the bill for it – obviously it has been inserted into the full cost of the package supplied by the course provider. It’s certainly not free (although some people will believe anything the marketing companies think up these days!)

Students who take each progressive exam, paying for them just before taking them are much better placed to get through first time. They are aware of their spending and so are more inclined to be up to the task.

Take your exams somewhere local and find the best exam deal or offer available then.

Including money in your training package for exam fees (and if you’re financing your study there’ll be interest on that) is insane. It’s not your job to boost the training company’s account with your money only to please their Bank Manager! Some will be pinning their hopes on the fact that you don’t even take them all – but they won’t refund the cash.

Re-takes of previously unsuccessful exams via training companies with an ‘Exam Guarantee’ inevitably are heavily regulated. You’ll be required to sit pre-tests so you can prove to them you have a good chance of passing.

Splashing out often many hundreds of pounds extra on an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is naive – when a commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools is what will get you through.

‘In-Centre’ days can be offered as an important element by a lot of trainers. When you chat with many IT students who have used them, you’ll begin to see a common thread – they are viewed as a mistake due to many reasons:

* Lots of round trips – normally 100′s of miles.

* Availability of classes; frequently Monday to Friday and usually 2-3 days at a time. You then have the difficulty of the leave of absence.

* If we’ve got 20 days holiday per year, sacrificing half of them for study workshops leaves us with very few opportunities for days off.

* Training workshops often become quickly full, giving us the only option of a slot that doesn’t really suit.

* Tension is often caused in mixed classes where most students want to move at a pace comfortable for them.

* The growing costs associated with travel – travelling to the training centre together with several days bed and breakfast can cost a lot each time you attend. If we just assume 5-10 workshops at about thirty-five pounds for one night’s accommodation, plus forty pounds for petrol and 15.00 for food, we arrive at 450-900 pounds of hidden costs that we now have to fund.

* You should never risk even a small chance of being side-stepped for potential advancement or income boosts while you’re training.

* Many of us find it difficult to ask questions in a class full of other trainees – so we don’t appear ignorant.

* For those of us who need to at times work or live away part of the time, imagine the trouble involved in getting to the necessary events, as time is now more scarce than ever.

Why not just watch and be trained by teachers one-to-one via pre-made modules, taking them when it suits you – not somebody else.

You could study at home on your PC or if you’ve got a laptop, you can go anywhere. Any questions; then use the provided 24×7 live support (that you should have insisted on for any technical study.)

Forget taking notes – every lesson is laid out for you already. If you need to cover something again, it’s there.

Even though it’s impossible to remove every single problem, it unquestionably removes stress and makes things simpler. And you’ve reduced costs, hassle and travel.

Should you be doing a search for training tracks certified by Microsoft, you will no doubt be hoping for training organisations to offer a wide range of some of the top learning programmes available today.

Should you be doing a search for training tracks certified by Microsoft, you will no doubt be hoping for training organisations to offer a wide range of some of the top learning programmes available today.

You might also want to have a discussion on the jobs available to you after you’ve completed your training, and which personalities such positions could suit. Lots of people like to discuss what they might be good at.

When you’ve settled on the job you’d like to get into, a suitable training program has to be picked that’s reflects your ability level and skill set. This can be personally tailored for you as an individual.

Adding in the cost of examination fees up-front and offering an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is a common method with many training course providers. However, let’s consider what’s really going on:

Certainly it’s not free – you’re still coughing up for it – the price has simply been included in the whole thing.

The honest truth is that when students fund their relevant examinations, one at a time, they’ll be in a better position to pass every time – because they are conscious of what they’ve paid and will therefore apply themselves appropriately.

Don’t pay up-front, but seek out the best deal for you at the time, and avoid college mark-up fees. You’ll then be able to select where you do the examinations – meaning you can choose a local testing centre.

Considerable numbers of questionable training providers net big margins because they’re charging for examinations upfront and hoping that you won’t take them all.

Most companies will require you to do mock exams and with-hold subsequent exam entries from you until you’ve proven conclusively that you can pass – which makes an ‘Exam Guarantee’ frankly useless.

With the average price of Pro-metric and VUE exams coming in at around 112 pounds in the UK, it’s common sense to fund them one by one. Why splash out often many hundreds of pounds extra at the beginning of your training? A commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools are actually the key to your success.

Authorised simulation materials and exam preparation packages are vital – and really must be offered by your training company.

As many examining boards for IT are from the USA, you’ll need to be used to the correct phraseology. It isn’t good enough simply going through the right questions – it’s essential that you can cope with them in the proper exam format.

Obviously, it’s very crucial to be confident that you’re absolutely ready for the real exam prior to going for it. Going over simulated exams helps build your confidence and helps to avoid wasted exam attempts.

Have a conversation with any capable consultant and you’ll be surprised by their many horror stories of students who’ve been sold completely the wrong course for them. Only deal with an experienced advisor that asks some in-depth questions to discover the most appropriate thing for you – not for their bank-account! You need to find a starting-point that will suit you.

An important point to note is that, if you have some relevant accreditation or direct-experience, then you can sometimes expect to start at a different point than someone who is new to the field.

It’s wise to consider some basic user skills first. It can brush up on your current abilities and make the transition to higher-level learning a less steep.

Remember: a training itself or an accreditation isn’t the end-goal; a job that you’re getting the training for is. A lot of colleges seem to put too much weight in the actual accreditation.

It’s an awful thing, but the majority of trainees begin programs that seem marvellous in the sales literature, but which gets us a career that is of no interest at all. Try talking to typical university graduates to see what we mean.

You must also consider how you feel about career development, earning potential, and if you’re ambitious or not. It’s vital to know what industry expects from you, what accreditations will be required and in what way you can develop commercial experience.

Your likely to need help from an advisor that can explain the sector you think may suit you, and is able to give you ‘A typical day in the life of’ explanation for each job considered. All of these things are absolutely essential as you’ll need to fully understand if this change is right for you.

If you’re looking for Cisco training but you have no experience with routers, what you need is CCNA. This training program has been put together to teach people with a working knowledge of routers. Big organisations that have different locations rely on routers to join up their various different networks of computers to allow their networks to keep in touch. The Internet also is made up of hundreds of thousands of routers.

It’s important to have an understanding of the operation and function of computer networks, because computer networks are joined to routers. If not, it’s likely you’ll run into difficulties. We’d recommend you first take a course in the basics – perhaps Network+ and A+, before you start a CCNA course. You may find training companies will put such a package together for you.

Getting your Cisco CCNA is where you should be aiming; don’t be cajoled into attempting your CCNP. With experience, you can decide whether you need to train up to this level. If so, your experience will serve as the background you require to take on your CCNP – as it’s a very complex course – and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Throw out any salesman who pushes one particular program without performing a ‘fact-find’ to better understand your current abilities and also your experience level. They should be able to select from a generous array of training so they’re able to give you an appropriate solution.

Of course, if you’ve had any relevant qualifications that are related, then you can sometimes expect to begin at a different level to a trainee with no history to speak of.

If you’re a new trainee embarking on IT studies as a new venture, it can be useful to start out slowly, beginning with user-skills and software training first. Usually this is packaged with any educational course.

Now, why might we choose commercially accredited qualifications instead of familiar academic qualifications obtained from tech’ colleges and universities?

With an ever-increasing technical demand on resources, the IT sector has moved to specific, honed-in training that the vendors themselves supply – in other words companies such as Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA. This usually turns out to involve less time and financial outlay.

The training is effectively done by honing in on the skills that are really needed (together with a relevant amount of related knowledge,) instead of spending months and years on the background ‘padding’ that degrees in computing are prone to get tied up in (to fill up a syllabus or course).

What if you were an employer – and you required somebody who had very specific skills. Which is the most straightforward: Trawl through reams of different degrees and college qualifications from several applicants, having to ask what each has covered and which vocational skills have been attained, or select a specialised number of commercial certifications that perfectly fit your needs, and draw up from that who you want to speak to. The interview is then more about the person and how they’ll fit in – rather than establishing whether they can do a specific task.

Your training program should always include the very latest Microsoft (or any other key organisation’s) accredited exam simulation and preparation packages.

Ensure that the mock exams aren’t just asking you the right questions on the correct subjects, but additionally ask them in the way that the actual final exam will formulate them. This really messes up people if they’re faced with unrecognisable phrases and formats.

‘Mock’ or practice exams are enormously valuable in helping you build your confidence – so that when you come to take the real thing, you will be much more relaxed.

Students often end up having issues because of one area of their training which is often not even considered: The breakdown of the course materials before being packaged off through the post.

Students often think it makes sense (with training often lasting 2 or 3 years to achieve full certification,) that a training provider will issue the courseware in stages, as you achieve each exam pass. But:

What if there are reasons why you can’t finish every exam? What if you don’t find their order of learning is ideal for you? Because of nothing that’s your fault, you might take a little longer and not get all the study materials as a result.

To be straight, the very best answer is to get an idea of what they recommend as an ideal study order, but get everything up-front. You then have everything if you don’t manage to finish within their ideal time-table.

If you're thinking about studying for the MCSE certificate, it's probable that you fall into one of the following categories.

If you’re thinking about studying for the MCSE certificate, it’s probable that you fall into one of the following categories. You may want to come into the computer world, and you’ve discovered that this commercial sector has a huge demand for qualified people. Instead you may be already a professional ready to consolidate your skill-set with the MCSE qualification.

When researching training providers, make it a policy to don’t use those who cut costs by not providing the latest version from Microsoft. Such institutions will hold back the student their knowledge will be of outdated MCSE course material which isn’t in line with the present exams, so it’s likely they’ll fail.

Training companies should be devoted to offering the correct route for their trainees. Directing learning is equally about guiding people on establishing which direction to go in, as it is giving them help to reach their destination.

So, why ought we to be looking at qualifications from the commercial sector as opposed to familiar academic qualifications gained through schools, colleges or universities?

The IT sector is of the opinion that for an understanding of the relevant skills, the right accreditation supplied for example by Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA often is more effective in the commercial field – and a fraction of the cost and time.

In essence, only that which is required is learned. It’s slightly more broad than that, but the most important function is always to focus on the exact skills required (with some necessary background) – without going into too much detail in all sorts of other things (as academia often does).

In simple terms: Accredited IT qualifications provide exactly what an employer needs – the title is a complete giveaway: as an example – I am a ‘Microsoft Certified Professional’ in ‘Managing and Maintaining Windows Server 2003′. Therefore companies can identify just what their needs are and which qualifications are required to fulfil that.

IT has become one of the more electrifying and revolutionary industries to be involved in today. To be working on the cutting-edge of technology puts you at the fore-front of developments that will impact the whole world for generations to come.

It’s a common misapprehension that the revolution in technology that’s been a familiar part of our recent lives is easing off. This couldn’t be more wrong. Massive changes are on the horizon, and the internet significantly is going to dominate how we conduct our lives.

And don’t forget salaries either – the average salary throughout Britain for a typical IT worker is significantly more than the national average. Chances are that you’ll receive a much better deal than you could reasonably hope to get in other industries.

The need for well trained and qualified IT technicians is assured for quite some time to come, because of the substantial increase in this sector and the massive deficiency that remains.

Accredited exam preparation packages are crucial – and absolutely ought to be offered by your training company.

Often students can be thrown off course by practising exam questions that are not from official sources. It’s not uncommon that the phraseology can be quite different and it’s vital that you know this.

Be sure to ask for testing modules so you’ll be able to verify your understanding along the way. Practice or ‘mock’ exams will help to boost your attitude – then the actual exam is much easier.
